What happens when you have purchased an RDS reservation and then six months later, you need a bigger database service? Therein lies the main issue with RDS reservations. Although often providing greater cost savings than EC2 reservations, you must ensure you are able to use an RDS RI for at least one year. As you may be aware, there isn’t a marketplace for selling RDS reservations. So, if you don’t use it, you are stuck. And in that case, you are ultimately counteracting most of the “cost savings” that you initially planned on.
